Key Responsibilities
1. Refractory Planning & Management:
- Prepare and implement annual and monthly refractory maintenance plans for all SMS units.
- Plan and schedule relining, patching, fettling, and gunning operations in coordination with production and maintenance.
- Ensure optimum utilization of monolithic, shaped, and unshaped refractories.
- Review refractory consumption data and prepare cost and performance reports.
- Implement best practices and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for refractory installation and drying.
2. Performance Monitoring & Optimization:
- Track and analyze refractory life, wear rate, and consumption for EAF, LF, VD, Ladles, and Tundish.
- Identify causes for premature wear or failure, and take corrective and preventive actions.
- Optimize slag composition, metal temperature, and operating parameters to enhance refractory performance.
- Benchmark refractory KPIs (life, cost per ton, specific consumption) against industry standards.
- Lead trials and evaluate performance of new refractory materials and vendors.
3. Material Procurement & Vendor Coordination:
- Prepare monthly refractory requirement forecasts based on production targets and consumption trends.
- Review and approve technical specifications for refractory procurement.
- Coordinate with purchase and stores for timely availability of refractory materials.
- Conduct vendor evaluation, technical audits, and performance reviews.
- Ensure quality inspection of refractory materials at receipt and during installation.
4. Installation & Maintenance Supervision
- Supervise refractory lining, gunning, and fettling operations for EAF, LF, VD, and CCM areas.
- Ensure adherence to design drawings, refractory layout plans, and SOPs.
- Monitor drying and preheating cycles for ladles and tundish.
- Maintain and review furnace lining charts, ladle life records, and tundish history sheets.
- Coordinate with mechanical, production, and safety teams during maintenance shutdowns.
5. Cost & Inventory Management:
- Control refractory consumption cost per ton of liquid steel through systematic optimization.
- Monitor and maintain inventory levels to ensure uninterrupted supply and cost efficiency.
- Implement refractory cost-saving and improvement projects.
- Prepare annual refractory budgets and track variance against actual performance.
6. Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure safe working practices during refractory installation, handling, and hot repair activities.
- Conduct safety audits, toolbox talks, and hazard identification (HAZOP) for refractory operations.
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies and environmental norms.
- Maintain 5S and housekeeping standards in refractory storage and working areas.
7. Technical Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain comprehensive refractory life, consumption, and performance records for all SMS units.
- Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly performance reports to management.
- Document Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports for premature failures.
- Support management audits, ISO documentation, and technical reviews.
8. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead a team of engineers, supervisors, and contractors to execute refractory operations effectively.
- Allocate responsibilities and monitor daily job progress and safety compliance.
- Conduct technical training and skill development programs for the refractory team.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Ceramic / Metallurgical / Mechanical Engineering
Experience:
- Manager: 10–14 years of experience in refractory management of SMS or integrated steel plants.
- Sr. Manager: 14–18 years of experience with proven expertise in refractory performance optimization in EAF/LF/VD/CCM operations.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- In-depth knowledge of refractory materials (bricks, castables, gunning & ramming masses) used in EAF, LF, and CCM.
- Strong understanding of steelmaking process parameters affecting refractory life.
- Expertise in ladle lining design, tundish management, and slag control.
- Analytical skills for life tracking, cost optimization, and failure analysis.
- Excellent leadership, coordination, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Proficiency in MS Office, SAP (PM/MM modules), and data analysis.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity improvement.
