1. Coke Oven Operation Management:
- Supervise and control the entire Coke Oven battery operation (charging, coking, pushing, and quenching).
- Ensure stable oven pressure, temperature uniformity, and coking time as per process norms.
- Monitor and optimize coal charge quality, blend ratio, and moisture content for consistent coke strength (CSR, CRI).
- Coordinate with Coal Handling Plant (CHP) and By-Product Plant (BPP) for uninterrupted input and output flows.
- Ensure adherence to operating parameters to prevent battery leakage, oven damage, or poor carbonization.
- Plan and execute battery heating-up, oven repair, and maintenance shutdowns with maintenance teams.
2. CDQ (Coke Dry Quenching) System Operation:
- Ensure smooth operation of the CDQ system to recover heat from hot coke and generate steam or power.
- Maintain proper control over:
- Coke temperature at CDQ inlet and outlet.
- Circulating gas temperature, pressure, and flow.
- Steam generation and recovery efficiency.
- Optimize heat recovery performance and reduce specific energy consumption.
- Monitor performance of CDQ boiler, fans, gas circulation system, dust collectors, and cooling towers.
- Coordinate with the Power Plant / Utility Team for steam and power balance.
- Troubleshoot abnormalities like:
- Gas leakage, dust accumulation, or reduced cooling efficiency.
- Coke breakage or uneven cooling.
3. Process Control & Optimization:
- Analyze daily production, coke quality, and CDQ system data to identify deviations and optimize parameters.
- Support process trials for energy optimization and improved coke quality.
- Coordinate with the process control & automation team to fine-tune DCS logic and instrumentation.
- Implement best practices for minimizing fuel consumption and maximizing waste heat recovery.
- Support the implementation of digital monitoring systems (SCADA/DCS) for real-time control.
4. Maintenance & Equipment Reliability:
- Coordinate with Mechanical, Electrical, and Instrumentation teams for planned and preventive maintenance.
- Ensure high equipment availability of:
- Coke Oven machines (charging car, pusher car, quenching car).
- CDQ equipment (boiler, fans, valves, cyclones, conveyors).
- Prepare and execute shutdown and maintenance schedules.
- Analyze equipment performance and implement reliability improvement plans.
5. Safety, Health & Environment (SHE):
- Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental standards in coke oven and CDQ operations.
- Enforce PPE usage, confined space entry, and LOTO procedures.
- Minimize fugitive emissions, dust, and gas leakages.
- Promote safety culture through toolbox talks, training, and incident reporting.
- Support ISO standards: ISO 45001 (OHS), ISO 14001 (Environment), and ISO 9001 (Quality).
6. Team Management & Training:
- Lead a team of Shift In-charges, Engineers, and Operators.
- Plan and allocate manpower for all shifts ensuring seamless 24x7 operations.
- Conduct regular skill development sessions on safe and efficient operation.
- Drive team performance through motivation and structured KPIs.
7. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain daily and monthly reports covering:
- Coke production, quality, and yield.
- CDQ performance data (heat recovery, steam generation, efficiency).
- Equipment downtime and maintenance schedules.
- Support audits and management reviews through accurate data reporting.
- Prepare deviation analysis and action plans for performance improvement.
Qualifications:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgical / Mechanical / Chemical / Production / Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Strong technical knowledge of Coke Oven, CDQ systems, and gas handling.
Experience:
- Manager: 8–12 years of experience in Coke Oven and CDQ plant operation in an integrated steel plant.
- Sr. Manager: 12–16 years of experience in Coke Oven & CDQ process, control, and maintenance coordination.
- Hands-on experience in automation systems (PLC/DCS) and energy recovery preferred.
- Experience with large-capacity batteries (≥0.5 MTPA) is desirable.
Technical Skills:
- Sound knowledge of the cooking process, heat recovery, and carbonization chemistry.
- Understanding of CDQ system operation, boiler efficiency, and steam balance.
- Familiarity with Coke Oven battery design and refractory maintenance.
- Proficiency in DCS/SCADA systems and process instrumentation.
- Basic understanding of by-product gas system and emission control.
- Competence in MS Office, SAP (PM/MM modules), and data analytics tools
