Key Responsibilities:
1. Shift Mechanical Operations & Supervision:
- Act as Mechanical Shift In-Charge for utility area cranes during assigned shifts.
- Ensure safe and reliable operation of cranes supporting SMS utilities and material handling.
- Supervise fitters, technicians, and contract manpower; allocate shift jobs and monitor execution.
- Attend crane mechanical breakdowns promptly and restore operation with minimal downtime.
2. Crane Mechanical Systems Maintenance:
- Maintain mechanical systems of:
- EOT cranes, ladle cranes, charging cranes, maintenance cranes, and auxiliary hoists
- Hoisting mechanisms, wire ropes, hooks, sheaves, brakes, couplings, and gearboxes
- Inspect crane structures, rails, end carriages, wheels, and buffers.
- Ensure proper alignment, lubrication, and condition monitoring of moving parts.
3. Preventive Maintenance & Reliability:
- Execute preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for crane mechanical equipment.
- Conduct periodic inspections, NDT coordination, load testing, and rope replacement activities.
- Identify recurring crane failures and participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Implement corrective actions to improve crane availability and reliability.
4. Safety, Compliance & Statutory Requirements:
- Enforce crane safety norms, permit systems, LOTO procedures, and PPE usage.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, third-party inspections, and certifications.
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety inspections in crane operating areas.
- Investigate crane-related incidents and implement preventive measures.
5. Spares, Lubrication & Shutdown Support:
- Ensure availability of critical crane mechanical spares and consumables.
- Monitor spares usage and report shortages or abnormal consumption.
- Maintain lubrication schedules and ensure proper lubrication practices.
- Support crane overhauling, major maintenance, and shutdown activities.
6. Coordination & Reporting:
- Coordinate with SMS operations, electrical, and utility teams for crane availability.
- Maintain shift logbooks, breakdown reports, inspection records, and spares data.
- Escalate major mechanical issues and provide technical feedback to senior management.
- Support audits, TPM initiatives, and continuous improvement programs
Skills, Abilities & Knowledge:
Skills:
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills for crane systems.
- Hands-on experience with wire ropes, brakes, gearboxes, bearings, and structural components.
- Ability to read and interpret crane mechanical drawings and OEM manuals.
- Effective communication and coordination skills.
Abilities:
- Ability to independently manage crane mechanical shift operations.
- Ability to work at heights and in hazardous industrial environments.
- Ability to manage technicians and contract manpower effectively.
- Ability to respond quickly and decisively during crane breakdowns.
Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of EOT crane mechanical systems used in iron & steel plants.
- Knowledge of crane safety standards, statutory norms, and inspection requirements.
- Understanding of SMS material handling and utility crane operations.
- Familiarity with SAP/CMMS maintenance systems (preferred).
