1. Refractory Maintenance & Execution:
- Plan and execute refractory relining, repair, patching, and maintenance activities for Coke Oven batteries, regenerator, and CDQ units.
- Supervise refractory installation during shutdowns, ensuring adherence to design and technical specifications.
- Carry out periodic inspections to identify cracks, bulging, and wear patterns in oven walls, doors, and regenerators.
- Coordinate with operations for hot and cold repair jobs, including silica brick replacement and guniting/fettling work.
- Ensure refractory dry-out and baking schedules are properly followed during commissioning or relining.
2. Performance Monitoring:
- Track refractory life, wear rate, and consumption trends for all Coke Oven zones.
- Analyze refractory failure modes (spalling, thermal shock, chemical attack) and implement preventive measures.
- Maintain daily/weekly refractory performance data, including temperature, pressure, and oven condition logs.
- Support technical evaluation and trial of new refractory materials for life enhancement and cost optimization.
3. Material Handling & Quality Control:
- Verify refractory quality, size, and specifications during receipt and storage.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of refractory materials to avoid damage and contamination.
- Coordinate with the quality and purchase teams for inspection and testing of incoming refractory materials.
- Prepare material issue plans as per maintenance and shutdown schedules.
4. Coordination & Planning:
- Prepare job plans and resource requirements (manpower, tools, refractory material) for all refractory activities.
- Liaise with Mechanical, Electrical, and Operation departments for maintenance coordination.
- Support execution of annual shutdowns and planned maintenance schedules.
- Ensure timely completion of refractory jobs with minimal impact on production.
5. Safety, Environment & Compliance:
- Follow and enforce safety protocols during refractory works, especially in confined or hot areas.
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety checks before and during refractory maintenance.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and safety norms during disposal of refractory waste.
- Adhere to 5S, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards in the workplace.
6. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of refractory job history, material usage, and life data for all Coke Oven units.
- Prepare and submit daily job progress and consumption reports to the section head.
- Assist in preparation of monthly refractory performance summaries and cost analyses.
- Support documentation for audits, shutdown reports, and improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Ceramic / Metallurgical / Mechanical Engineering
Experience:
- Engineer: 2–5 years of experience in refractory maintenance of Coke Oven or related high-temperature units in an integrated steel plant.
- Sr. Engineer: 5–8 years of experience with hands-on expertise in Coke Oven refractory systems (chamber walls, regenerator, doors, CDQ).
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Sound knowledge of Coke Oven design, refractory lining patterns, and materials (silica, fireclay, insulating).
- Experience in refractory installation, guniting, fettling, and dry-out.
- Understanding of Coke Oven heating and pressure balance and its impact on refractory performance.
- Proficiency in refractory inspection and measurement tools.
- Good analytical and problem-solving ability for failure diagnosis.
- Team player with strong coordination and communication skills.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and reliability.
- Working knowledge of MS Office / SAP (PM & MM) preferred.
