Key Responsibilities
1. Refractory Maintenance & Execution:
- Plan and execute refractory relining, repair, and maintenance jobs for hearth, bosh, stack, tuyeres, and cast house areas.
- Supervise brick lining, ramming, guniting, and patching work during scheduled and emergency maintenance.
- Ensure proper runner relining, trough dressing, and skimmer repairs in coordination with cast house operations.
- Participate in major shutdown and relining activities, ensuring compliance with design specifications and safety norms.
- Monitor refractory baking and drying schedules during furnace startup or relining.
2. Inspection & Monitoring:
- Conduct routine inspections of furnace shell temperatures, refractory conditions, and signs of wear or damage.
- Monitor hearth and wall temperatures through thermocouple data and thermal imaging to detect hot spots.
- Record and analyze refractory wear rates, life, and consumption trends to ensure reliable performance.
- Identify potential failure zones and plan preventive maintenance accordingly.
3. Refractory Material Handling & Quality Control:
- Verify refractory material quality, dimensions, and specifications before installation.
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and drying of refractory materials to prevent damage or contamination.
- Coordinate with the quality control and purchase departments for refractory material testing and inspection.
- Track inventory, consumption, and cost of refractory materials and consumables.
4. Coordination & Planning:
- Prepare daily and shutdown refractory job plans, material requirement lists, and manpower schedules.
- Coordinate with Operations, Mechanical, Electrical, and Instrumentation teams to ensure smooth job execution.
- Support vendor and contractor supervision during major maintenance or relining work.
- Ensure timely completion of all refractory activities with minimal production loss.
5. Safety & Environmental Compliance:
- Implement strict safety standards during refractory activities, especially in confined and high-temperature zones.
- Ensure compliance with hot work permits, confined space entry procedures, and PPE usage.
- Maintain cleanliness and housekeeping standards during and after refractory jobs.
- Support ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and 5S implementation within the refractory section.
6. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain detailed refractory history cards, inspection logs, and job completion reports.
- Record and report refractory life performance and consumption data on a daily and monthly basis.
- Prepare root cause analysis reports for premature refractory failures and recommend improvement actions.
- Support audits, performance reviews, and management reporting related to refractory operations.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Ceramic Engineering / Metallurgical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering
Experience:
- Engineer: 2–5 years of experience in Blast Furnace refractory maintenance in an integrated steel plant.
- Sr. Engineer: 5–8 years of hands-on experience in Blast Furnace refractory repair, installation, and performance monitoring.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of Blast Furnace refractory design (hearth, bosh, stack, tuyeres, and cast house).
- Familiar with refractory materials such as carbon blocks, alumina, silica, and high-alumina castables.
- Experience in refractory repair techniques — guniting, shotcreting, patching, ramming, and dry-out procedures.
- Proficiency in temperature monitoring, lining wear analysis, and refractory life tracking.
- Ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams and manage contractors effectively.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with focus on safety and quality.
- Working knowledge of MS Office / SAP (PM, MM modules) preferred.
