Key Responsibilities
1. Blast Furnace Operation
- Operate and monitor Blast Furnace process parameters via PLC/DCS/SCADA systems.
- Maintain stable operation by controlling:
- Top pressure and differential pressure.
- Hot blast pressure, temperature, and humidity.
- Oxygen enrichment and burden descent.
- Gas flow and distribution for optimum reduction efficiency.
- Support control room and field teams in maintaining consistent hot metal output and quality.
- Record and analyze process trends to identify deviations and support corrective actions.
- Coordinate with Stock House, Cast House, PCI, and Blower House for smooth, synchronized operations.
2. TRT (Top Pressure Recovery Turbine) Operation
- Operate and monitor the TRT system to recover energy from Blast Furnace top gas.
- Ensure stable TRT operation by controlling:
- Top gas pressure, temperature, and flow rate.
- Turbine inlet and outlet conditions for optimal power generation.
- By-pass valve and control valve settings to maintain furnace top pressure balance.
- Coordinate with Power Plant and Electrical teams for synchronization, load management, and turbine efficiency.
- Monitor gas cleaning system performance (GCP) to ensure dust-free gas entering the TRT.
- Ensure compliance with operational limits to prevent turbine vibration, erosion, or imbalance.
- Record and analyze TRT performance (kWh generation, availability, pressure drop).
3. Process Optimization:
- Assist in optimizing furnace operation for:
- Fuel rate reduction (coke + PCI).
- Improvement of gas utilization and furnace pressure control.
- Enhanced TRT power recovery and efficiency.
- Conduct trials to evaluate process and mechanical modifications for improving furnace and TRT performance.
- Coordinate with process and energy management teams for energy recovery optimization.
4. Monitoring & Troubleshooting:
- Identify abnormalities such as:
- Irregular pressure fluctuation, vibration, or noise in TRT.
- Gas distribution issues or furnace top pressure imbalance.
- Process disturbances like hanging or scaffolding.
- Support immediate corrective actions in coordination with Shift In-charge.
- Ensure safe switching between TRT and By-pass operation during maintenance or emergency conditions.
5. Coordination & Communication:
- Liaise with:
- Blower House: for blast pressure and air temperature.
- GCP & TRT Team: for top gas handling and pressure control.
- Cast House: for tapping sequence and hot metal flow.
- Electrical & Instrumentation: for monitoring and control system reliability.
- Ensure smooth information flow during shift operations and handovers.
6. Safety, Health & Environment:
- Strictly adhere to Blast Furnace and TRT safety protocols.
- Ensure PPE compliance, LOTO procedures, and safe turbine operation practices.
- Report any unsafe condition, vibration, or process deviation immediately.
- Maintain area housekeeping and support ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 / ISO 9001 standards.
- Participate in safety audits, hazard identification, and near-miss reporting.
7. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain logs for:
- Blast Furnace process parameters (pressure, temperature, gas composition).
- TRT performance data (inlet/outlet pressure, power output, generation hours).
- Update daily operation reports, deviation records, and maintenance logs.
- Support monthly KPI analysis and report preparation.
- Assist in audits, energy reports, and management reviews.
Qualifications:
- B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Metallurgical / Production Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Knowledge of iron-making process, thermodynamics, and turbine operation principles.
Experience:
- Engineer: 2–5 years of experience in Blast Furnace operation and energy recovery systems.
- Sr. Engineer: 5–8 years of experience in furnace process monitoring and TRT operation in an integrated steel plant.
- Hands-on experience with PLC/DCS/SCADA systems (Siemens / ABB / Honeywell) preferred.
- Exposure to energy efficiency systems and turbomachinery is desirable.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Blast Furnace operation parameters and control logic.
- Understanding of TRT system design, operation, and protection mechanisms.
- Knowledge of gas cleaning systems (GCP) and pressure control logic.
- Ability to analyze pressure, flow, and temperature data trends.
- Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical interfaces of the TRT.
- Familiarity with MS Office, SAP (PM/MM modules), and energy MIS systems
