Key Responsibilities
1. Blast Furnace Operation Control
- Supervise and control all operational parameters of the Blast Furnace through the Central Control Room (CCR) and ensure stable furnace operation.
- Maintain optimum furnace temperature, top pressure, and gas flow distribution for uniform burden descent and fuel efficiency.
- Monitor and regulate hot blast temperature, pressure, oxygen enrichment, and moisture control.
- Ensure efficient management of charging sequences, burden distribution, and skip operations.
- Coordinate with Stock House, Cast House, Blower House, and Gas Cleaning Plant for synchronized operation.
- Manage process stability during taphole opening/closing, cast start/end, and furnace slips or hanging conditions.
2. Process Monitoring & Optimization
- Continuously monitor key process indicators (KPI) such as:
- Coke rate and fuel efficiency
- Productivity (t/m³/day)
- Hot metal temperature & silicon percentage
- Pressure drop across furnace
- Blast volume and top gas utilization (CO/CO₂ ratio)
- Analyze operational trends and implement corrective actions for process deviations.
- Work closely with process engineers to optimize burden distribution, tuyere condition, and thermal regime.
- Lead initiatives to improve furnace campaign life, energy consumption, and refractory performance.
- Participate in studies for process modeling and automation upgrades.
3. Control Room Management
- Ensure round-the-clock operation of the Blast Furnace Control Room with adequate staffing and shift planning.
- Train and guide control room operators on PLC/DCS operations, alarm monitoring, and response protocols.
- Manage real-time data logging, event recording, and parameter trending.
- Coordinate with Instrumentation and Electrical departments for smooth operation of automation systems.
4. Trouble Shooting & Emergency Handling:
- Identify and respond to abnormal furnace conditions like hanging, slipping, channeling, high top pressure, or tuyere blockage.
- Take quick corrective measures in coordination with field and maintenance teams to restore furnace stability.
- Lead emergency operations during power failures, blast interruptions, or cast house delays.
5. Production & Quality Assurance:
- Achieve targeted hot metal production with desired temperature, silicon, and phosphorus levels.
- Optimize use of burden materials (sinter, pellet, lump ore, and coke) for consistent quality and cost control.
- Support metallurgical control to achieve high-quality hot metal suitable for SMS
- requirements.
6. Coordination & Communication:
- Coordinate with Cast House, Raw Material Handling, PCI System, Power & Blowing Station, and Maintenance teams.
- Conduct daily review meetings to discuss furnace performance, process deviations, and improvement plans.
- Ensure effective communication between control room and field operation teams.
7. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain detailed log sheets of all furnace parameters, cast data, and process changes.
- Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports with performance analysis.
- Support management reviews, audits, and compliance documentation.
8. Safety & Compliance
- Ensure strict adherence to Blast Furnace safety protocols during operation and control room activities.
- Monitor safe working practices in high-temperature and pressurized zones.
- Conduct safety training and participate in incident investigations.
- Comply with ISO, EMS, and OHSAS standards related to ironmaking operations.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgical / Mechanical / Production Engineering (mandatory).
- Experience:
- Manager: 10–15 years of experience in blast furnace operation, including
- 3–5 years in control room or process optimization.
- Sr. Manager: 15–20 years of experience in furnace operation and process control, preferably in furnaces ≥0.5 MTPA capacity.
- Industry: Integrated Steel Plant / Iron Making Division.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong technical knowledge of blast furnace process, burden distribution, and gas dynamics.
- Hands-on experience with PLC/DCS systems (ABB, Siemens, Honeywell, etc.).
- Understanding of oxygen enrichment, PCI system, and hot blast stoves operation.
- Proficiency in data analysis, trouble-shooting, and furnace performance optimization.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Familiar with SAP, MS Office, and plant data acquisition systems..
