Key Responsibilities
1. Mechanical Operation & Maintenance:
- Oversee the mechanical operation and maintenance of mill equipment such as stands, gearboxes, spindles, couplings, roller tables, shears, laying heads, and pinch rolls.
- Ensure continuous equipment availability with minimum downtime through structured preventive and predictive maintenance.
- Plan, schedule, and execute shutdown maintenance in coordination with production and electrical/instrumentation departments.
- Monitor and maintain alignment, vibration, temperature, and lubrication of critical components.
- Supervise stand assembly, pass setup, and roll change activities ensuring safety and accuracy.
- Review mill performance parameters and drive improvements in mill efficiency and reliability.
2. Reliability & Performance Improvement:
- Identify chronic mechanical issues and conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for repetitive breakdowns.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions to enhance mean time between failures (MTBF).
- Coordinate with OEMs (e.g., Danieli, SMS, Morgan, Kocks) for technical support, modifications, and system improvements.
- Drive reliability initiatives (TPM / RCM / Kaizen) for performance optimization.
- Ensure effective utilization of predictive maintenance tools such as vibration analysis, thermography, and oil condition monitoring.
3. Planning & Resource Management:
- Prepare and execute annual and monthly maintenance plans and budgets for WRM mechanical systems.
- Plan and manage critical spare parts, consumables, and maintenance tools inventory.
- Coordinate with procurement and stores for timely availability of materials and spare parts.
- Optimize resource utilization, maintenance costs, and energy consumption.
4. Safety, Quality & Compliance:
- Ensure all maintenance and operation activities comply with safety standards, SOPs, and PPE protocols.
- Conduct safety audits, toolbox talks, and risk assessments within the mill area.
- Maintain compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and TPM standards.
- Implement and monitor 5S and housekeeping practices in mechanical maintenance areas.
- Promote a culture of zero-incident operation and continuous safety improvement.
5. Coordination & Communication:
- Work closely with operation, electrical, instrumentation, hydraulic, and utility teams for smooth mill functioning.
- Coordinate with roll shop and guide shop for roll and guide change schedules.
- Interface with the control room for real-time feedback on mill performance and abnormalities.
- Participate in daily production and maintenance review meetings, highlighting critical issues and improvement actions.
6. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of breakdowns, downtime analysis, and maintenance work orders in SAP / CMMS.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on equipment availability, performance KPIs, and maintenance cost analysis.
- Update equipment history cards, drawings, and technical documentation regularly.
- Support internal and external audits, inspections, and management review meetings.
7. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, supervisors, and technicians for mill area maintenance.
- Assign and monitor responsibilities during shifts and shutdowns.
- Conduct training programs on mechanical systems, preventive maintenance, and safe work practices.
- Evaluate team performance and foster continuous learning, teamwork, and accountability.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Production Engineering
Experience:
- Deputy Manager: 10–14 years of experience in mechanical maintenance of WRM / Bar Mill / Long Product Mills.
- Manager: 14–18 years of experience in mill operation and maintenance, with strong leadership and project management experience.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of WRM mill stands, gearboxes, couplings, drive spindles, roller tables, shears, and pinch rolls.
- Experience with OEM systems (Danieli, SMS, Morgan, or Kocks).
- Expertise in preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance practices.
- Sound understanding of hydraulic, lubrication, and cooling systems used in rolling mills.
- Familiarity with condition monitoring tools and maintenance software (SAP PM / CMMS).
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and leadership abilities.
- Strong communication and interdepartmental coordination skills.
