Key Responsibilities
1. Furnace Operation:
- Oversee day-to-day operation of the Blast Furnace to ensure consistent and safe performance.
- Maintain and control key process parameters including:
- Blast pressure, temperature, and oxygen enrichment.
- Top pressure, burden descent rate, and gas flow distribution.
- Hot blast and top gas temperature management.
- Support control room in achieving stable furnace operation with desired hot metal output, quality, and temperature.
- Implement measures to prevent furnace irregularities (hanging, slipping, scaffolding, or channeling).
- Participate in start-up, shutdown, blow-down, and emergency handling operations.
2. Stock House Operation & Burden Management:
- Supervise and ensure uninterrupted functioning of the Stock House for feeding raw materials to the furnace.
- Manage and optimize the burden charging sequence based on process requirements and control room directives.
- Monitor and control:
- Distribution and weighing of raw materials (sinter, pellets, lump ore, coke, and fluxes).
- Batching accuracy and skipping car operation.
- Raw material bin levels and stock monitoring.
- Coordinate with Raw Material Handling Plant (RMHP) for timely feeding and material availability.
- Ensure proper charging sequence design to maintain uniform burden distribution and gas flow.
- Work closely with the Control Room to adjust burden ratio based on process trends and top gas analysis.
- Ensure preventive maintenance of Stock House equipment such as conveyors, bins, weighing systems, and skip hoists.
3. Process Optimization & Control
- Monitor furnace process data for:
- Burden composition and coke rate.
- Blast and gas utilization efficiency.
- Productivity and specific energy consumption.
- Identify improvement opportunities in burden distribution, gas utilization, and raw material efficiency.
- Assist in the implementation of automation and digital systems for process monitoring.
- Analyze deviations in process parameters and support corrective actions in real time.
4. Coordination & Communication:
- Coordinate with:
- Control Room: for burden adjustment, charging sequence, and furnace condition.
- Cast House: for hot metal tapping and cast sequencing.
- PCI Section: for maintaining furnace thermal balance and fuel optimization.
- Maintenance Teams: for addressing mechanical/electrical/instrumentation issues in Stock House and Furnace.
- RMHP / Raw Material Yard: for ensuring continuous supply and material blending.
- Ensure proper shift handover communication and documentation.
5. Safety, Health & Environment:
- Ensure all operations in the Stock House and Furnace area adhere to safety standards and SOPs.
- Enforce PPE usage, safe operating practices, and LOTO procedures.
- Conduct safety toolbox meetings, risk assessments, and near-miss reporting.
- Drive safety culture within the team and ensure zero-incident operation.
- Support compliance with ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 / ISO 9001 standards.
6. Manpower Management:
- Supervise and guide shift engineers, operators, and field technicians in the
- Stock House and Furnace area.
- Plan and implement shift rosters ensuring adequate manpower coverage for 24×7 operations.
- Conduct regular training sessions on process, safety, and equipment handling.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and process discipline within the department.
7. Maintenance Coordination:
- Coordinate with maintenance departments for:
- Preventive and predictive maintenance of Stock House equipment.
- Downtime planning during blast furnace shutdowns or relines.
- Monitoring of weighing systems, skip hoist, gates, and valves.
- Maintain a log of breakdowns, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
8. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of:
- Daily hot metal production and furnace performance.
- Burden distribution, charging pattern, and material consumption.
- Process deviations and corrective actions taken.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on furnace and stock house performance.
- Support management reviews, audits, and KPI evaluations.
Qualifications:
- B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Metallurgical / Mechanical / Production / Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Strong theoretical and practical understanding of Blast Furnace operation,
- burden distribution, and raw material handling systems.
Experience:
- Deputy Manager: 7–10 years of experience in Blast Furnace or Stock House operations.
- Manager: 10–14 years of experience in iron-making operations, with expertise in burden management and process control.
- Experience in Integrated Steel Plants (≥0.5 MTPA Blast Furnace) preferred.
- Hands-on exposure to automation systems (PLC/DCS) and process instrumentation desirable.
Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of Blast Furnace operation parameters and burden preparation logic.
- Familiarity with Stock House automation, batching, and weighing systems.
- Proficiency in process data analysis, SAP (PM/MM modules), and production MIS.
- Understanding of gas distribution, thermal control, and burden charging sequence optimization.
