About this Job

Key Responsibilities:

Blast Furnace Operations:

  • Manage day-to-day blast furnace operations during assigned shifts. 
  • Ensure achievement of hot metal production targets with stable furnace conditions. 
  • Monitor and control charging practice, blast parameters, tuyere performance, and tapping operations. 
  • Identify and respond to abnormal furnace conditions to minimize production losses.

Process Monitoring & Control:

  • Monitor key operational parameters such as top pressure, pressure drop, gas utilization, HM and slag chemistry. 
  • Assist in optimization of coke rate, PCI rate, and fuel efficiency. 
  • Analyze operational data and recommend corrective actions to improve furnace stability.

Safety, Health & Environment (SHE):

  • Ensure strict adherence to safety SOPs, work permits, and statutory requirements. 
  • Conduct toolbox talks, shift safety meetings, and hazard identification.
  • Support incident investigation and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

Maintenance & Refractory Coordination:

  • Coordinate with maintenance teams for routine inspections and minor shutdown activities. 
  • Monitor refractory condition of hearth, bosh, stack, runners, and troughs. 
  • Support refractory repair activities such as gunning, shotcreting, and runner maintenance.

Quality & Cost Control:

  • Ensure hot metal chemistry meets steelmaking requirements. 
  • Control slag basicity, volume, and tapping temperature. 
  • Assist in reducing operational losses, fuel consumption, and refractory wear.

People & Shift Management:

  • Supervise shift engineers, foremen, and operators. Ensure proper manpower deployment and shift discipline. 
  • Support training and skill development of operating personnel.

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Prepare and review daily shift reports and operational logs. 
  • Track KPIs related to productivity, fuel rate, and safety. 
  • Support audits, management reviews, and consultant interactions.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Hot metal production per shift 
  • Furnace stability and availability 
  • Coke rate / PCI rate adherence 
  • Safety compliance and incident-free shifts 
  • Hot metal and slag quality consistency

Educational Qualification:

  • B.E./B.Tech/Diplomo/BSC– Metallurgical / Mechanical / Chemical Engineering/Chemistry 
  • Diploma with extensive BF operational experience may be considered (as per company policy) 

Experience Requirement:

  • 8–12 years of experience in blast furnace operations
  • Experience in shift or field operations preferred 
  • Exposure to medium to large blast furnaces desirable

Technical Skills (Must Have):

  • Blast furnace process knowledge 
  • PCI operation and control 
  • Hot metal and slag chemistry understanding 
  • Knowledge of refractory and runner maintenance 
  • Safety procedures and permit systems

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Strong shift leadership and coordination skills 
  • Problem-solving and analytical ability 
  • Good communication and reporting skills 
  • Ability to work in rotating shifts and high-pressure environments

Preferred / Added Advantage:

  • Experience in blow-in, blow-out, or relining activities 
  • Familiarity with Level-1 / Level-2 automation systems 
  • Exposure to commissioning or ramp-up of blast furnaces
