Key Responsibilities
1. Roll Shop Operations Management:
- Plan, organize, and monitor all roll grinding, grooving, and inspection activities as per the rolling program.
- Review and approve roll pass setup and ensure proper assembly for smooth mill operation.
- Track and analyze roll wear, groove performance, and surface quality to improve roll life and reduce rejections.
- Manage roll inventory, coordinate roll reconditioning, and ensure timely availability of backup rolls.
- Liaise with production and quality teams to assess roll-related issues and initiate corrective measures.
- Control roll consumption costs and implement optimization measures.
2. Guide Shop Operations:
- Supervise guide preparation, inspection, assembly, and maintenance activities.
- Ensure correct alignment, lubrication, and cooling of guides for defect-free rolling.
- Monitor guide wear, failure analysis, and plan guide reconditioning or replacement.
- Manage guide inventory and coordinate procurement or in-house fabrication of spares.

3. Workshop & Mechanical Maintenance Management:
- Oversee machining, fabrication, and repair work for WRM components in the mechanical workshop.
- Ensure proper functioning of workshop machines (lathe, milling, drilling, balancing, and welding equipment).
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for roll shop, guide shop, and workshop equipment.
- Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation departments to resolve breakdowns and improve reliability.
- Review maintenance logs and breakdown reports to drive continuous improvement.
4. Process Optimization & Performance Improvement
- Analyze roll and guide life data to identify improvement opportunities.
- Implement process optimization initiatives to reduce downtime, enhance product quality, and improve tool performance.
- Drive cost reduction projects through better material utilization, maintenance efficiency, and energy optimization.
- Monitor KPIs such as roll life, guide life, equipment uptime, and maintenance cost per ton.
- Collaborate with design and operations teams for improvements in pass design and tooling efficiency.
5. Safety, Quality & Compliance:
- Enforce safety standards for all operations in roll shop, guide shop, and workshop areas.
- Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and toolbox talks to ensure zero-incident operations.
- Ensure adherence to 5S, TPM, ISO, and IATF standards within all areas of responsibility.
- Promote awareness of safety, housekeeping, and environmental protection among team members.
- Maintain documentation for audits, incident reports, and compliance checks.
6. Team Leadership & Coordination:
- Lead, guide, and train engineers, supervisors, and technicians for high-performance operations.
- Delegate responsibilities effectively and monitor team performance against defined objectives.
- Coordinate with production, quality, and maintenance teams for seamless mill operations.
- Foster a culture of discipline, accountability, and continuous learning within the team.
- Support management in manpower planning, skill development, and succession planning.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Metallurgical / Production Engineering
Experience:
- Assistant Manager: 8–12 years of experience in WRM Roll Shop, Guide Shop, or Workshop operations in an integrated steel plant (≥0.5 MTPA).
- Deputy Manager: 12–15 years of relevant experience with proven capability in team handling, process optimization, and cost management.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Comprehensive knowledge of WRM roll and guide systems (Danieli / Morgan / SMS / KOCKS type).
- Expertise in roll pass setup, guide alignment, and rolling equipment maintenance.
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and preventive maintenance skills.
- Ability to analyze technical data for roll/guide performance improvement.
- Familiarity with ISO, TPM, and 5S management systems.
- Proficiency in MS Office, SAP / ERP, and mill monitoring systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, and coordination skills.
