About this Job

Key Responsibilities

1. Process & Operation Management:

  • Ensure smooth and safe operation of LRF and VD units for secondary refining of molten steel.
  • Control temperature, alloy additions, slag composition, and stirring parameters to meet chemistry and inclusion requirements.
  • Monitor argon purging, vacuum cycle parameters, and degassing duration as per grade specifications.
  • Plan and coordinate ladle movement between EAF → LRF → VD → Caster, ensuring minimum heat loss and delay.
  • Achieve production targets with optimum power consumption, electrode consumption, and ferro-alloy usage.
  • Record and analyze heat-wise operational parameters, power-on time, cycle time, and deviations.

2. Quality & Metallurgical Control:

  • Ensure steel chemistry and cleanliness meet grade-specific metallurgical standards.
  • Maintain accurate sampling, testing, and correction cycles for alloy additions.
  • Liaise with the quality control laboratory for quick test results and corrective action.
  • Optimize refining practices for inclusion control, desulphurization, and hydrogen removal.
  • Implement and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all LRF/VD operations.

3. Equipment & Utility Coordination:

  • Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams for equipment health and availability.
  • Monitor and maintain key systems like power supply, vacuum pumps, transformers, ladle tilting, roof movement, and alloy feeding.
  • Report equipment abnormalities and ensure timely corrective actions.
  • Participate in maintenance shutdown planning and feedback for reliability improvement.

4. Safety & Environment

  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, PPE usage, and hot metal handling procedures.
  • Conduct pre-job safety checks and implement safe work practices in LRF/VD operations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper refractory handling in the working area.
  • Comply with environmental norms regarding fume extraction, dust collection, and slag disposal.

5. Process Improvement & Optimization:

  • Analyze operational data to identify opportunities for process optimization and cost reduction.
  • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) of process delays, power trip events, and heat rejections.
  • Implement continuous improvement projects (Kaizen, TPM, Six Sigma) for yield, energy, and quality improvement.
  • Support automation, process control, and digitization initiatives within the SMS.

6. Coordination & Reporting:

  • Coordinate with EAF, Caster, Refractory, and Maintenance teams for smooth process flow.
  • Maintain heat logs, shift reports, and daily production summaries.
  • Support audits, inspections, and management reviews with accurate documentation.
  • Participate in production and quality review meetings and communicate improvement actions.

7. Team Leadership & Development:

  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers, supervisors, and operators for LRF/VD operations.
  • Ensure adequate shift manning, skill development, and performance monitoring.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and adherence to operational excellence standards.
  • Conduct training on process parameters, safety, and emergency handling.

Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

  • B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgical / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering

Experience:

  • Assistant Manager: 6–10 years in secondary metallurgy operations (LRF/VD) in integrated steel plants.
  • Deputy Manager: 10–14 years in SMS operations with expertise in LRF and VD process control and team leadership.

Key Skills & Competencies:

  • In-depth understanding of secondary steel refining processes (LRF, VD, VOD).
  • Knowledge of steelmaking chemistry, slag-metal reactions, and desulphurization techniques.
  • Experience in vacuum pump operation, alloy feeding, electrode control, and ladle management.
  • Hands-on experience with automation systems (Level-1 & Level-2) for process monitoring.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-functional coordination skills.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, cost efficiency, and continuous improvement.
