Key Responsibilities
1. Furnace Operation & Process Control
- Operate and monitor all Blast Furnace process parameters through PLC/DCS/SCADA systems.
- Ensure stable furnace operation by maintaining:
- Burden descent rate and stock line control.
- Top pressure and blast parameters (temperature, pressure, moisture).
- Gas distribution and top gas efficiency (CO/CO₂ ratio).
- Oxygen enrichment, steam injection, and PCI rate optimization.
- Coordinate charging sequence with Stock House and monitor burden distribution.
- Support in implementing daily production plans and operating instructions issued by the Sr. Manager/Manager.
2. Production & Quality Achievement
- Achieve daily hot metal production and maintain metallurgical balance.
- Monitor and control hot metal temperature and composition (Si, P, S) as per SMS requirements.
- Maintain target coke rate and gas utilization efficiency.
- Ensure optimum use of sinter, pellets, lump ore, and coke as per the burden plan.
- Support in process analysis and suggest improvements for better fuel efficiency and furnace productivity.
3. Control Room Monitoring & Data Management
- Supervise shift-wise control room operations ensuring continuous and smooth data logging.
- Monitor trends, alarms, and deviations in furnace operation and initiate corrective actions.
- Coordinate real-time with field teams for tuyere, bustle main, and hot blast valve operations.
- Record, verify, and maintain operational data and shift reports.
- Prepare process reports and submit daily summaries to the reporting manager.
4. Trouble Shooting & Emergency Handling:
- Identify and respond to abnormalities such as hanging, slipping, scaffolding, channeling, etc.
- Take immediate action to stabilize furnace conditions under guidance from the shift in-charge / manager.
- Handle disturbances like blast pressure fluctuations, stock charging delays, tuyere failure, or power tripping.
- Ensure safe furnace operation during cast, blow-in, or blow-down conditions.
5. Coordination & Team Support:
- Coordinate with:
- Cast House for cast scheduling and metal tapping sequence.
- Stock House for charging sequence and burden control.
- Blower House / Stove for blast and temperature management.
- PCI & Gas Cleaning Plant for air/gas pressure balance.
- Maintenance (Electrical/Mechanical/Instrumentation) for planned or breakdown support.
- Support shift engineers and operators by giving clear operating instructions.
- Communicate all operational changes and issues during shift handovers.
6. Safety, Health & Environment (SHE):
- Strictly adhere to Blast Furnace safety standards during operation and maintenance.
- Ensure proper usage of PPEs and compliance with safety checklists and SOPs.
- Report unsafe acts, near misses, and process abnormalities immediately.
- Participate in safety drills, tool-box talks, and process audits.
- Maintain cleanliness and housekeeping in the control room and operating areas.
7. Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain shift logbooks, cast logs, and burden records.
- Record key parameters such as:
- Hot blast pressure and temperature.
- Gas flow and composition (CO/CO₂).
- Burden charge sequence and skip performance.
- Hot metal production and cast details.
- Prepare daily and shift-wise reports for furnace performance review.
Qualifications:
- B.E. / B.Tech / Diploma in Metallurgical / Mechanical / Production / Electrical Engineering from a recognized university or institution.
- Sound academic background with strong fundamentals in iron making process, furnace operation, and industrial systems.
Experience:
- Assistant Manager: 4–7 years of hands-on experience in Blast Furnace operation and control room activities.
- Deputy Manager: 7–10 years of experience in furnace operation, control system handling, and process optimization.
- Should have exposure to automation systems (PLC/DCS) and modern Blast Furnace operations (≥0.5 MTPA capacity).
- Preferably from an Integrated Steel Plant / Iron Making Division with experience in continuous process environments.
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of Blast Furnace process principles and operating dynamics.
- Knowledge of PLC/DCS/SCADA systems (Siemens, ABB, Honeywell, etc.).
- Familiarity with oxygen enrichment, PCI systems, top pressure control, and gas balance.
- Ability to interpret process trends, gas analysis, and furnace pressure- temperature profiles.
- Working knowledge of MS Office, SAP (PM/MM modules), and data logging systems.
- Basic understanding of safety interlocks, refractory health, and stove operation.
