Key Responsibilities
1. Casting Operations Management:
- Supervise and control CCM operations during all shifts ensuring smooth, continuous, and defect-free casting.
- Coordinate with LRF/VD for ladle arrival, steel temperature, and chemistry readiness.
- Manage tundish preparation, preheating, and sequence casting operations.
- Monitor and control mold level, withdrawal speed, and secondary cooling parameters to ensure optimal billet/bloom quality.
- Ensure proper ladle changeover and sequence management to minimize downtime and metal loss.
- Maintain accurate heat-wise and strand-wise records of production and operational parameters.
Product Quality & Process Control:
- Ensure billets/blooms meet required size, shape, surface quality, and internal soundness specifications.
- Monitor mold oscillation, lubrication, and water flow to prevent breakouts or surface defects.
- Coordinate with the Quality Control team for testing, inspection, and feedback.
- Analyze casting abnormalities such as sticker, breakout, or segregation and implement corrective measures.
- Optimize operational parameters to improve casting yield, sequence length, and metallurgical quality.
- Implement and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all casting activities.
3. Equipment & Maintenance Coordination:
- Ensure proper functioning of mold, tundish car, withdrawal and straightening unit, torch cutting, and run-out roller tables.
- Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation teams for preventive and corrective maintenance.
- Monitor and plan tundish refractory lining, mold condition, and spray nozzle performance.
- Support maintenance shutdown planning and provide feedback for reliability improvement.
- Ensure availability of critical spares and consumables (molds, SENs, nozzles, dummy bars, rollers, etc.).
4. Safety & Environmental Compliance:
- Implement strict safety protocols and PPE usage during all casting and ladle handling operations.
- Conduct safety checks, toolbox talks, and risk assessments for CCM area activities.
- Ensure proper fume extraction, water discharge, and scrap handling in compliance with environmental norms.
- Promote and enforce 5S and housekeeping practices within the CCM area.
- Investigate safety incidents and implement preventive measures.
5. Process Optimization & Continuous Improvement:
- Analyze casting data to improve productivity, reduce rejection, and enhance quality.
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for casting interruptions, nozzle blockages, and breakouts.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives under TPM / Kaizen / Six Sigma frameworks.
- Work on yield improvement, energy reduction, and consumable cost optimization projects.
- Implement automation and digitization initiatives for improved process control.
6. Coordination & Reporting:
- Coordinate closely with EAF, LRF/VD, and Rolling Mill teams to ensure heat synchronization and sequence planning.
- Liaise with refractory, mechanical, and utility teams for smooth operation.
- Prepare and maintain shift reports, production summaries, and delay analysis.
- Present daily/weekly/monthly performance reports and improvement plans to management.
- Support internal and external audits, inspections, and management reviews.
7. Team Management & Development
- Lead and supervise a team of engineers, operators, and technicians in the CCM area.
- Plan manpower deployment for each casting sequence and shift.
- Conduct training sessions on casting operations, tundish/mold management, and safety procedures.
- Evaluate team performance and foster a culture of responsibility, safety, and continuous learning.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgical / Mechanical / Production Engineering
Experience:
- Assistant Manager: 6–10 years of experience in CCM operation in integrated steel plants.
- Deputy Manager: 10–14 years of experience in billet/bloom casting operation and team leadership.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- In-depth knowledge of continuous casting processes (tundish, mold, secondary cooling, withdrawal system).
- Experience in billet/bloom casting machines from OEMs such as Danieli, SMS, or Primetals.
- Strong understanding of metallurgical quality control, strand monitoring, and casting automation.
- Familiarity with hydraulic, lubrication, and water cooling systems used in CCM.
- Hands-on experience in sequence planning, tundish management, and nozzle control.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and leadership abilities.
- Good knowledge of SAP / CMMS systems, data recording, and process reporting.
