About this Job

Key Responsibilities:

Operations Management:

  • Manage day-to-day blast furnace operations to achieve production and productivity targets. 
  • Ensure stable furnace operation with optimized coke rate, PCI rate, and fuel efficiency. 
  • Oversee charging practice, burden distribution, blast parameters, and tapping operations. 
  • Handle abnormal operating conditions and ensure minimum downtime.

Process Control & Performance Improvement:

  • Monitor key process indicators such as furnace pressure, gas utilization, hot metal and slag chemistry. 
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity and reduce operational losses.
  • Coordinate with raw material, coke oven, sinter, pellet, and PCI teams to ensure feed consistency.

Safety, Health & Environment (SHE):

  • Ensure compliance with safety policies, SOPs, and statutory regulations. 
  • Lead safety reviews, hazard identification, and incident investigations. 
  • Promote a strong safety culture across shifts and teams.

Maintenance & Refractory Coordination:

  • Coordinate with maintenance teams for planned shutdowns and emergency repairs. 
  • Monitor refractory performance (hearth, bosh, stack, runners, troughs). 
  • Support refractory repair activities such as gunning, shotcreting, and grouting.

Quality & Cost Control:

  • Ensure hot metal quality meets steelmaking requirements. 
  • Control slag parameters and minimize metal and heat losses. 
  • Support cost optimization initiatives related to fuel, refractories, and consumables.

People Management:

  • Lead and mentor shift managers, engineers, and operators. 
  • Ensure manpower planning, shift discipline, and skill development. 
  • Conduct training programs to enhance operational competence.

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Review daily and monthly production reports and KPIs. 
  • Support audits, management reviews, and consultant interactions. 
  • Maintain operational documentation and SOP compliance.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Hot metal production & productivity 
  • Coke rate / PCI rate 
  • Furnace availability & stability 
  • Safety performance (LTI / incidents)Fuel efficiency & cost control 
  • Hot metal quality consistency

Education Qualification:

  • B.E./B.Tech/Diplomo/BSC– Metallurgical / Mechanical / Chemical Engineering/Chemistry 
  • M.Tech or higher qualification preferred

Experience Requirement:

  • 12–18 years of relevant experience in blast furnace operations 
  • Minimum 5–7 years in a leadership or managerial role 
  • Exposure to medium or large blast furnaces (≥ 1,000 m³ preferred)

Technical Skills (Must Have):

  • Blast furnace operation & process control 
  • PCI system operation and optimization 
  • Hot metal & slag chemistry control 
  • Refractory and runner management 
  • Safety systems and statutory compliance

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and decision-making ability 
  • Analytical and problem-solving mindset 
  • Effective communication and coordination skills 
  • Ability to work under high-pressure operational environments

Preferred Experience (Good to Have):

  • Blast furnace blow-in / blow-out / relining 
  • Commissioning and ramp-up of new furnaces 
  • Automation systems (Level-1 / Level-2) 
  • Energy optimization and digital monitoring tools
