Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Operation & Maintenance:
- Ensure reliable operation and maintenance of all HT/LT electrical systems, MCCs, transformers, switchgear, motors, and control systems in the SMS area.
- Maintain high availability of power supply to EAF, LRF, VD, CCM, and auxiliary systems.
- Oversee operation and preventive maintenance of Pump House motors, drives, and starter panels ensuring uninterrupted cooling water supply.
- Ensure reliable operation of Fume Extraction Systems (FES), including fans, dampers, and bag filters.
- Monitor electrical loads, voltage, and power factor, optimizing energy usage and minimizing losses.
- Implement and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for all electrical assets.
2. Power Distribution & Energy Management:
- Supervise HT substations (11kV/33kV) and LT distribution systems for SMS.
- Monitor power consumption patterns of major loads (EAF transformer, VD pumps, FES fans, etc.) and identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvement.
- Coordinate with the central electrical and utility teams for power distribution, synchronization, and load balancing.
- Maintain and update single line diagrams (SLDs), cable schedules, and protection settings.
- Ensure healthiness and calibration of relays, circuit breakers, and protection systems.
- Implement and monitor energy conservation projects to reduce overall powermcosts.
3. Equipment Reliability & Maintenance Planning:
- Lead preventive and predictive maintenance activities for all electrical systems in the SMS area.
- Review and approve maintenance plans, checklists, and schedules for critical equipment.
- Coordinate with OEMs and contractors for major equipment overhauls or technical modifications.
- Analyze recurring failures and carry out Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to prevent reoccurrence.
- Maintain an updated critical spares list and ensure availability for essential equipment.
- Support implementation of Condition Monitoring Systems (CMS) for predictive maintenance.
4. Fume Extraction System (FES) Management:
- Ensure reliable functioning of the Fume Extraction System (FES) covering EAF, LRF, and CCM areas.
- Monitor draft pressure, motor loading, and filter efficiency to maintain air quality standards.
- Coordinate maintenance of bag filters, ducting, fans, dampers, and electrical drives.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations on emission norms and pollution control.
- Plan upgrades for improved efficiency and energy performance of FES equipment.
5. Safety, Compliance & Standards:
- Enforce strict compliance with electrical safety procedures, lockout-tagout (LOTO) systems, and PPE requirements.
- Conduct safety audits, risk assessments, and electrical inspections for all equipment and substations.
- Ensure compliance with statutory norms under the Indian Electricity Rules (IE Rules) and Factory Act.
- Ensure flameproof and safe wiring practices in hazardous zones.
- Promote and maintain 5S and housekeeping standards in electrical substations and pump houses.
6. Process Coordination & Communication:
- Work closely with operation, mechanical, and instrumentation teams to ensure uninterrupted plant operation.
- Coordinate with the power distribution team for load management during peak operations.
- Support commissioning and start-up activities of new or modified electrical systems.
- Participate in daily and monthly review meetings to report electrical KPIs and action plans.
- Maintain detailed records of downtime, breakdown analysis, and maintenance activities in SAP/CMMS.
7. Team Leadership &Development
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, supervisors, and electricians across multiple shifts.
- Plan manpower deployment for maintenance and operational requirements.
- Conduct technical training sessions on electrical safety, protection systems, and equipment operation.
- Evaluate team performance and encourage skill upgradation and accountability.
- Foster a proactive culture of safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering
Experience:
- Sr. Manager: 14–18 years of experience in electrical maintenance of SMS or heavy industrial plant (EAF/CCM exposure preferred).
- AGM: 18–22 years of experience in large integrated steel plant electrical systems with leadership in HT/LT, utilities, and FES operation.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- In-depth knowledge of HT/LT power systems, substations, and distribution networks.
- Expertise in EAF/CCM power distribution, pump house, and FES electrical systems.
- Proficiency in electrical protection systems, drives (VFDs), and MCC operation.
- Familiarity with energy monitoring systems, load management, and automation (SCADA/PLC).
- Strong understanding of electrical safety standards, statutory compliance, and industrial codes.
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with cross-functional departments.
- Analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills focused on reliability and cost optimization.
- Hands-on experience with SAP PM / CMMS systems for maintenance planning and reporting.
