Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic & Operational Leadership:
- Lead and manage all CCM operations, ensuring continuous, safe, and defect- free casting.
- Plan and execute casting schedules in coordination with EAF, LRF/VD, and Rolling Mill units.
- Ensure synchronization of heat arrival, tundish readiness, and sequence continuity to minimize delays and metal loss.
- Develop and implement production plans, ensuring achievement of monthly and annual tonnage targets.
- Drive initiatives for process optimization, yield improvement, and energy reduction.
2. Process Control & Quality Assurance:
- Ensure billets/blooms meet all metallurgical and dimensional quality parameters as per customer and internal standards.
- Optimize mold level control, secondary cooling, withdrawal speed, and oscillation parameters to improve surface and internal quality.
- Review and analyze casting data and defect reports, implementing corrective actions for consistent product quality.
- Coordinate with the Quality Control and R&D teams to address product deviations and process modifications.
- Standardize operating procedures (SOPs) for casting, tundish preparation, and sequence management.
3. Equipment & Reliability Management:
- Ensure high mechanical and electrical reliability of CCM machines, molds, tundish cars, torch cutting, and hydraulic systems.
- Plan and monitor preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance in coordination with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation departments.
- Approve annual maintenance schedules, equipment overhauls, and major repair plans.
- Review and approve maintenance feedback reports, downtime analysis, and improvement actions.
- Ensure adequate inventory and availability of critical spares and consumables (molds, SENs, tundish refractories, rollers, etc.).
4. Safety, Health & Environmental Management
- Enforce strict compliance with safety protocols, PPE usage, and SMS safety standards.
- Lead safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations within the CCM area.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding fume extraction, water discharge, and dust suppression systems.
- Promote 5S, housekeeping, and continuous safety training among the workforce.
- Drive a culture of zero-incident operation through proactive safety leadership.
5. Performance Monitoring & Reporting:
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as yield, productivity, sequence length, and downtime.
- Review heat-wise and shift-wise performance reports and guide the team in improvement planning.
- Conduct daily and monthly performance reviews with operation and maintenance teams.
- Analyze process trends, prepare MIS reports, and present performance data to senior management.
- Drive compliance with ISO, TPM, and internal audit standards.
6. Process Optimization & Technology Upgradation:
- Identify opportunities for automation, process digitization, and technological upgradation.
- Collaborate with OEMs (e.g., Danieli, SMS, Primetals) for performance improvement and technical modifications.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for major casting failures, breakouts, or nozzle blockages.
- Initiate and implement Kaizen, Six Sigma, and cost optimization projects for continuous improvement.
7. Manpower Management & Capability Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Deputy Managers, Assistant Managers, Engineers, and Operators.
- Ensure effective shift management, manpower utilization, and skill matrix implementation.
- Conduct training programs on casting technology, safety, and problem- solving techniques.
- Foster a high-performance culture promoting accountability, teamwork, and innovation.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- B.E. / B.Tech in Metallurgical / Mechanical / Production Engineering
Experience:
- AGM: 16–20 years of experience in CCM operations in an integrated steel plant.
- DGM: 20–25 years of experience in billet/bloom casting operations, with strong leadership and technical expertise.
Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of continuous casting processes, secondary cooling systems, and mold technology.
- Experience in automation systems (Level-1 / Level-2) and process control.
- Deep understanding of steel metallurgy, inclusion control, and strand performance.
- Proficiency in casting operation management, downtime analysis, and process optimization.
- Familiarity with OEM CCM systems (Danieli, SMS, Primetals, etc.).
- Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional coordination abilities.
- Expertise in safety management, team development, and continuous improvement frameworks (TPM, Kaizen, Six Sigma).
- Strategic mindset with focus on productivity, quality, cost, and sustainability.
